Our Football Program

Player Development

Developing confident, skilful players for every next stage of their football journey.

Please see our 2027 Junior Club Guide for more information.

The Discovery Phase | Typically ages 5–8

Learn through play. Build a love of football.

At this age, children learn best by being active, experimenting and having fun with the ball. Training focuses on developing coordination, confidence, creativity and basic football skills through enjoyable, game-based activities.
Players are encouraged to dribble, pass, shoot and make decisions in small-sided games, with coaches providing guidance and encouragement rather than overwhelming children with instructions.

The priority is simple: help children enjoy football, develop confidence and want to keep playing

The Skill Acquisition Phase | Typically ages 9–12

Build the technical foundations for the future.

As players develop, training becomes more structured, with a strong emphasis on mastering the core skills of football:
  • First touch: controlling the ball and preparing for the next action.
  • Passing and striking: passing, shooting and crossing with accuracy.
  • 1v1 ability: using skills, changes of direction and acceleration to beat opponents.
  • Running with the ball: dribbling, changing direction and protecting possession.
Training uses clear themes and game-related activities to help players apply these skills under pressure.

The objective is to build a strong technical foundation that supports future development.

The Game Training Phase | Typically ages 13+

Apply skills. Understand the game. Develop as a team player.

Players increasingly learn how to use their technical skills in realistic match situations. Training focuses on tactical awareness, decision-making, positioning and understanding how individuals contribute to the team.

Sessions combine technical work, game-based activities and tactical scenarios, helping players recognise situations, make decisions and execute skills under pressure.

Coaches also recognise the physical, emotional and social changes that occur during adolescence, supporting players as they take on greater responsibility and prepare for the demands of more advanced football.

Junior Pathways

West Adelaide provides opportunities for players at different ages, abilities and levels of ambition. From a child’s first experience of football through to competitive junior football and potential senior opportunities, our focus is on developing players and helping them find the right environment to progress.

Pathway

Different pathways. Continued development.

There is no single timeline for player development. Our goal is to help every player improve, enjoy their football and access appropriate opportunities as they progress. Team placement and selection are based on the needs of the program and the assessment of coaches. Progression to a particular team or senior squad is not guaranteed.

Junior Football FAQs

1. How does West Adelaide develop its players?
Our approach evolves as players grow. Younger players focus on enjoying football, building coordination and learning fundamental skills. As they progress, training places greater emphasis on technical ability, decision-making, tactical awareness and applying skills in match situations.

2. What is the difference between YCC and YSL?
YCC (Youth Club Championship) is a higher-level competitive program for selected teams from U13-U16. YSL (Youth State League) provides a competitive, development-focused environment for players to continue improving. Team placement depends on selection, player development and competition requirements.

3. How are teams selected? Does registration guarantee a place?
Registration is open for all for ages U5-U9 and we aim to created balanced squads at this age.
Trials are required from U10 onwards and grading based on ability applies. Grading considers player development, ability, competition requirements and available positions. Attending a trial does not guarantee a place in a particular squad.

4. Can players move between teams as they develop?
Yes. Player development continues throughout the season. Where appropriate, changes in team placement may be considered based on development, performance and team requirements. Any movement is subject to the club's football processes and available positions; it is not guaranteed. Any movement between YSL and YCC is subject to registration windows dictated by Football SA.

5. Can my child join if they're new to football?
Yes. We welcome players at different stages of their football journey. Our younger age groups provide an opportunity to learn the game, build confidence and develop fundamental skills. Contact the club if you're unsure which age group or program is appropriate.

6. Where is the junior program based?
Our junior program is based at Park 27B, Park Terrace, North Adelaide, in the north-west parklands opposite Plant 4 Bowden. All junior teams are based at Park 27B, although some training sessions or fixtures may occasionally move to our senior facility on Churchill Road, Kilburn (Kilburn Sportsplex) due to pitch availability.

See Contacts & Maps for more detail.

7. When are training sessions and games?
MiniRoos to U11 and girls' squads: Tuesday & Thursday evenings from 6 pm.
U12-U17 Boys: Wednesday & Friday evenings from 6 pm.
YCC teams: An additional Monday evening training session.

MiniRoos matches are generally played on Sundays between 8:30 am and midday.
